Mumbai Indians trade Hardik from Titans and trade Cameron Green to RCB

On Sunday, the Mumbai Indians finalized the trade for Hardik Pandya from the Gujarat Titans. Simultaneously, they traded their all-rounder Cameron Green to the Royal Challengers Bangalore, aiming to bolster their purse for the upcoming IPL player auction on December 19.

These transactions were officially confirmed by a BCCI official and subsequently acknowledged by the IPL on Monday.

Nita M Ambani, Mumbai Indians' owner, expressed her delight, stating, "We are thrilled to welcome Hardik back home! It's a heartwarming reunion with our Mumbai Indians family." She emphasized Hardik's journey from a young talent scouted by Mumbai Indians to becoming a star in Team India.

Akash Ambani, another owner of Mumbai Indians, shared his happiness at Hardik's return, calling it a "happy homecoming" and highlighting the valuable balance Hardik brings to any team. He expressed optimism about Hardik achieving even more success in his second stint with the team.

In return for Hardik Pandya, the Gujarat Titans' purse will receive a boost of INR 15 crore, which was Hardik's salary. Additionally, Mumbai will pay an undisclosed transfer fee to the Titans, with Hardik potentially earning up to 50% of that fee based on their mutual agreement.

These developments unfolded after the 5 pm IST deadline on Sunday for franchises to announce their lists of released and retained players ahead of the auction. At that point, Hardik was still part of the Titans, and Green was included in Mumbai's retained players.

As per IPL rules, the player trading window opened a month after the season ended, remaining active until a week before the auction. It will then resume on December 20, staying open until a month before the start of the 2024 season. The upcoming auction is scheduled for December 19.

Mumbai had let go of 11 players before the retention deadline, freeing up INR 15.25 crore in their auction budget. While this amount covered the cost of acquiring Hardik (INR 15 crore), it would have left Mumbai with minimal funds for the auction. However, by trading Green to RCB in an all-cash transaction, Mumbai bolstered their purse by an additional INR 17.50 crore.

According to ESPNcricinfo sources, Mumbai had approached at least two franchises for a player swap before the retention deadline, but these negotiations didn't materialize.

The Titans franchise, owned by CVC Capital Partners, was established in 2021 and was permitted to select three players from the pool released by other franchises before the 2022 mega auction. They secured Hardik and Afghanistan all-rounder Rashid Khan for INR 15 crore each, with Shubman Gill being their third pick at INR 7 crore.

Hardik played a pivotal role in leading the Titans to the title in their debut IPL season in 2022, earning the Player of the Match in the final against Rajasthan Royals. In 2023, under Hardik's captaincy, the Titans reached the IPL final for the second consecutive season, finishing as runners-up to the Chennai Super Kings. In both seasons, the Titans, guided by Hardik, claimed the top spot in the league stage points table.

During his two-season tenure with the Titans, Hardik amassed 833 runs in 30 innings, maintaining an average of 41.65 and a strike rate of 133.49. Additionally, he claimed 11 wickets with an economy of 8.1.

However, it was with Mumbai that Hardik initiated his IPL journey and evolved into one of the premier all-rounders in the sport. Initially purchased for INR 10 lakhs as an uncapped player in 2015, Hardik played a pivotal role in Mumbai's title triumphs in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. Retained by Mumbai before each auction until 2021, he was unexpectedly released ahead of the 2022 mega auction. Mumbai, restricted to retaining only four players that year, chose to keep Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Kieron Pollard, clearing the path for Titans to secure Hardik as their captain.

Gujarat Titans have named Shubman Gill as their captain

Following the trade of Hardik Pandya to Mumbai Indians, Shubman Gill has been appointed as the captain of Gujarat Titans for the upcoming IPL season. Gill, aged 24, takes on his first leadership role in the IPL, succeeding Hardik, who led the Titans in 2022 and 2023.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Gill stated, "I am delighted and proud to assume the captaincy of Gujarat Titans and thank the franchise for their trust in me to lead such a fine team." He looks forward to leading the team with their exciting brand of cricket.

Gill commenced his IPL journey with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018 and joined the Titans ahead of the 2022 auction for INR 7 crore. In IPL 2022, he scored 483 runs, contributing significantly to the Titans' title victory. In the following season, he emerged as their highest run-scorer with 890 runs in 17 innings, including three centuries, leading the Titans to the runners-up position in the final against Chennai Super Kings.

Currently ranked fifth in the list of top run-scorers in the IPL over the last six years, Gill will lead a formidable Titans lineup featuring experienced players like Kane Williamson, Rashid Khan, David Miller, Matthew Wade, and Wriddhiman Saha. Gill brings captaincy experience from leading Indian domestic sides in the Duleep Trophy and Deodhar Trophy.

Vikram Solanki, Titans' director of cricket, emphasized Gill's growth in stature and leadership, citing his integral role in the team's success in 2022 and a strong performance in 2023. Solanki expressed excitement about embarking on a new journey with Gill as the young leader at the helm.
