Liverpool's draw at Man City hints at title race on horizon

In the race for this season's Premier League title, the question arises: who truly wants it, and more importantly, who believes they can secure it? Following Manchester City's 1-1 draw against Liverpool on Saturday, while they remain favorites, their rivals are uniting against Pep Guardiola's squad.

While City aims to secure an unprecedented fourth consecutive English title, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur are in close proximity to the top spot. The opportunity to conclude the campaign as champions is becoming a viable prospect for each of these contenders.

City's dominance in clinching the Premier League title has become customary, winning five of the past six seasons, with only Liverpool interrupting their streak in 2020. However, this season presents the most competitive race for the English title in recent years.

Post the Etihad Stadium clash, only four points separated the top five teams in the Premier League. In Spain and France, this gap was 10 points, and in Italy and Germany, it was 11. While City has historically pulled clear in the later stages of the season, recent results indicate that the dynamics could shift this time.

Arsenal has already defeated City this season, Chelsea held them to a draw in a thrilling 4-4 encounter two weeks ago, and now Liverpool has emerged unbeaten against Guardiola's team. With Tottenham scheduled to face City at the Etihad on December 3, a failure to secure a victory against another top contender will likely boost the confidence of the challengers, opening the door for another team to capitalize on any potential points dropped by City.

We are currently anticipating the emergence of that standout team—the one labeled the best of the rest or the club willing to show ambition in January by making a transformative signing, propelling them from challengers to potential champions.

Liverpool stands out as a strong contender to outpace City in the title race. They achieved what has become almost improbable—earning points at the Etihad. If City had held on for the win, they would have matched Sunderland's remarkable feat of 24 consecutive home victories in all competitions, a record dating back to 1894.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's 80th-minute equalizer secured a well-deserved point for Liverpool after Erling Haaland, in his 48th Premier League appearance, became the quickest player to reach 50 goals, putting City ahead in the 27th minute. Haaland surpassed Andy Cole's record of 65 games with Newcastle in 1993-94. While neither team did enough to secure the win, there was significance in City's failure to claim victory and Liverpool's ability to draw level after Haaland's goal.

City's recurrent pattern of struggling against their closest rivals may allow the chasing pack to stay in contention. Tottenham and Aston Villa, City's next two league opponents, have the potential to add to Guardiola's frustrations by securing positive results. Conversely, Liverpool's success in halting City's home winning streak will bolster confidence at Anfield, with belief growing that Klopp and his team can replicate their 2019-20 title win this season. Despite emerging with a point, Klopp expressed that his team played below their potential and could have won with a better performance.

Manchester City found themselves dropping points against another top Premier League club this season as Trent Alexander-Arnold secured an equalizer for Liverpool.

Klopp acknowledged that despite having the potential to win, Liverpool's performance was only at an "OK" level. He pointed out that while they posed problems for City, their good moments didn't feel impactful. Klopp highlighted the challenge of playing at City's home ground, emphasizing the team's consistent success there and acknowledging City as a formidable opponent.

Guardiola, on the other hand, expressed pride in City's performance and result, considering it an excellent display. He commended the team's performance in all aspects against a formidable opponent like Liverpool. Guardiola acknowledged the defensive prowess of Liverpool, mentioning that conceding only two shots on target against them is a significant compliment to City's work.

While Guardiola didn't express concern about City's title hopes, he noted the visible absence of Kevin De Bruyne, emphasizing the midfielder's importance to the team. De Bruyne's injury has left a void in City's midfield, impacting their penetration and energy. Guardiola recognized the challenge ahead with De Bruyne's absence until the New Year. Despite Liverpool's midfield not fully capitalizing on City's deficiencies, the game concluded with both teams content with a point and avoiding a loss.

The result was deemed favorable for Liverpool, and more significantly, for the title race. The article suggests that if one of the contenders can hit title-winning form, City's struggles against top sides may open the path for a different team to claim the Premier League trophy in May.
