Rajasthan Royals did not have a need for Joe Root in IPL 2023, according to BCCI.
Joe Root, the English batsman who debuted for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2023, has chosen not to participate in IPL 2024, withdrawing just a day before the retention deadline. The Royals expressed their respect for Root's decision in a statement on their website. Kumar Sangakkara, the Royals' director of cricket, acknowledged Root's positive impact on the franchise and players during his brief time, expressing that his energy and experience will be missed. The team fully respects Root's decision and wishes him success.
Rob Key, England's managing director of men's cricket, previously mentioned that Root "needs a break" at the conclusion of the World Cup, providing context to Root's decision to step back from IPL 2024.
"He hasn't had a break since New Zealand, being consistently involved in tournaments like ILT20, New Zealand series, The Hundred, Ashes, and more," remarked Rob Key.
In the IPL 2023 auction, Rajasthan Royals secured Root for his base price of INR 1 crore. Although he played only three matches, batting in just one and scoring 10 against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Root aimed to absorb diverse information and adapt to the T20 format.
Despite limited opportunities, Root's presence brought depth and experience to the Royals squad, benefiting young players like Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag, and Yashasvi Jaiswal. The franchise highlighted Root's camaraderie with Jos Buttler and bonding with Yuzvendra Chahal as memorable moments during his stint.
Root follows his Test captain Ben Stokes as the second England player to withdraw from the upcoming IPL season. The deadline for franchises to announce releases and retentions is November 26, with the auction scheduled for December 19. Rajasthan Royals have already made moves in the trade window, acquiring Avesh Khan and releasing Devdutt Padikkal to Lucknow Super Giants.
